Stephen M. Lingle, age 74, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017. He was a resident of Morgantown.
Stephen was born June 24, 1943, in Martinsville, to the late Verless and Sarah (Hammack) Lingle. He was a 1961 graduate of Martinsville High School and went on to serve as a Specialist 4 in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Stephen also served in the National Guard for three years following his Army service.
Stephen retired in 2005 from the maintenance department of the General Motors Truck & Bus Plant in Indianapolis after 33 years. He enjoyed fishing, but his passion was track and field. During high school, Stephen set a school record in the 440 which was just shy of the world record in 1958. He took great pride in encouraging children to take up running and teaching them how to successfully compete in track.
Stephen married Rachel J. (McKinney) Lingle on January 29, 1987 in Nashville. She preceded him in death on February 1, 2012 after twenty-five years of marriage. He also was preceded in death by an infant son, Darrin Lingle and siblings, Ruby Kemp and Frederick Lingle.
Stephen is survived by a daughter, Carmen E. Orndorff of Linden, Virginia; grandchildren, Amber Kesner of Augusta, West Virginia and Brandon Sizemore of Winchester, Virginia; and several great grandchildren.
The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard will be at Hilldale Cemetery in Martinsville.
