Robert L. "Bob" Burkert, age 83, passed away Thursday evening, December 17, 2015 at Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Freedom and former resident of Shelby County.
Bob was born March 28, 1932, in Indianapolis, to the late Charles P. and Ruth (Hines) Burkert. He attended Garden City Schools in Indianapolis and went on to marry Louella May "Betty" (Hunley) Burkert on December 2, 1950 in Indianapolis. She lovingly survives after 65 years of marriage.
He served 4 years as a Seaman First Class with the Navy Reserve, Division 39. Bob retired in 1986 from Skill Trades with Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis after 35 years of service. He also worked for over 40 years as a Reserve Deputy for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and 60 years as a Security Supervisor for the Indianapolis 500 infield.
Bob was a 50 year member of the Sugar Creek Masonic Lodge #279 in Fairland, where he served as Past Master and Secretary, and was a 50 year member of both the Scottish Rite and Shrine. Other memberships include, the American Legion in Coal City Post #141, where he was past Post Commander, and he was a lifetime member of the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club.
Bob enjoyed deer hunting, boating & feeding the hummingbirds. He and his wife were avid travelers, often seeing the countryside from his motorcycle. Bob was a collector of watches and old clocks.
He is survived by his wife, Betty and caregivers, Matt (Laura) Burkert of Avon, Jennifer (Jeff) Reed of Morgantown and David (Denise) Burkert of Carmel.
Bob was preceded in death by siblings, Betty Burkert, Phyllis Beck, Virginia McClellan, Charles Burkert Jr., Paul Burkert, Raymond Burkert, and Steven Burkert.
The Rev. Ben Swopes will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with military rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards.
