Meredith C. “Jack” Stone, age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, January 19, 2019 at Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.
Jack was born November 16, 1931 in Indianapolis to his parents, the late Marion C. and Cecil (White) Stone. He was a 1949 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis where he excelled in track; after graduating he went on to serve as a Seaman with the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954.
Jack spent parts of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s in the car business selling and as a Finance Manager for many of the grand old names in the Indianapolis automobile dealership business like Ed Martin, Bob Baker, Tom O’Brien, Chuck Callahan, Freda Lockhart, Red Dellen, Dave McIntire, Don Sisk and many others. Prior to retiring completely from the car business Jack sold credit life and other automobile financial products for the Bruce Gaines Agency in Indianapolis where he was able to continue many of his friendships in the Indiana car business. It was during these years that Jack somehow found the time to learn a new trade; re-upholstering furniture. After leaving the car business behind and successfully learning the new craft via numerous correspondence courses Mr. Stone started Wanamaker Upholstery Shoppe in his garage on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The business eventually moved to another location in the area and Jack continued working with furniture until 2011 in the Franklin area.
Jack was never one to sit still for very long and enjoyed working numerous jobs after retirement most notably cutting grass at Hillview Country Club and Cypress Run Golf Course which allowed him to simply be left alone to his thoughts which he loved. He also enjoyed his early morning walks, working with his hands and making nick nacks, playing golf, vacationing with his wife in Las Vegas and eating anything sweet. Jack was a huge fan of the Cincinnati Reds and loved watching them on TV whenever possible. Additionally, prior to the arrival of the Colts, Jack enjoyed yelling at the television whenever his beloved Chicago Bears were playing. Lovingly called Meredith, Memo, Jack, Uncle Jack, and Grandpa Jack throughout his lifetime he will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Alice P. (Manning) Stone whom he married on June 13, 1997 in Las Vegas. He is also survived by his son, Kevin Stone of Indianapolis; step daughter, Donna (Ron) Petre of Missouri; grandchildren, Christopher Stone, Madison Stone and Robbie Stone all of Indianapolis, Stephanie Stone and Kevin Stone, both of West Virginia; several step grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Kevin Stone; and siblings, Sibyl Pruner and Beverly Hansman.
