Lee J. Brickey

Lee J. Brickey passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on Saturday morning, November 12, 2016 at the Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a former resident of Greenwood and Morgantown as well as Tampa and Homosassa, Florida.

Lee was born in Salem, Virginia on November 4, 1916, to his parents, the late Elijah J. and Mina Lee (Johnston) Brickey.  He served with the United States Navy during World War II as an Aviation Support Equipment Technician. After the war, Lee worked for the Virginia Railroad and later became a self-employed carpenter working well into his 70’s.

While his 100th birthday was approaching on the 4th of this month, Lee made four goals for himself. One to see the Cubs win the World Series, second, make it to 100 years old, third, to share his birthday party with family and friends and lastly, to see Donald Trump become President. All of his goals were successfully reached.

Lee was a member of both the First Christian Church of Morgantown and the First Christian Church in Homosassa, Florida, where he served as an Elder. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, mushroom hunting and watching all sports.

Lee is survived by his Children: Cyndee Caldwell and Patsy Deckard both of Tampa, FL; Lee (Syble) Smith of Bargersville and Lora (Bill) Fesler of Whiteland; grandchildren: Kelli Webb, Kathy Wilkerson, Kay Richter, Greg Smith, Scott Fesler, Doug, Jennifer and Darrin Deckard, Donald Brickey, Tammy Johnson, Donna Gail and Francee Humphrey; 19 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.    

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Beulah O. (Williams) Smith-Brickey, whom he married on November 19, 1966 in Morgantown. Lee was also preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie  and Donnie Brickey; and siblings: Rachel Alexander, Marie Hackworth, Lewis and Morris Brickey and a young sister Louise; grandson Tim Caldwell, granddaughter Brenda and two sons-in-law Doug Deckard and Gary Caldwell.

The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
