Gilia (Olivier) "Jill" McDaniel

Gilia (Olivier) "Jill" McDaniel, age 93 passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, September 7, 2014 at the IU Health Morgan Hospital in Martinsville. She was a resident of Martinsville.

Jill was born in Longarone, Italy on February 15, 1921 to her parents, the late Primo and Lina Olivier. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1929. Jill met Luford L. McDaniel in New Jersey when he was stationed there as a Captain with the United States Army. They married on May 10, 1943 and after a separation due to World War II. They resided in Martinsville most of their married life.

Jill was a homemaker and also worked as a businesswoman, being involved in an apartment business and various retail endeavors in the Martinsville area. She will be remembered as an unselfish and generous woman who loved her family and actively attended church her whole life and never lost faith that better things were yet to come for her and her loved ones.

Jill was a member of the St. Martin Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville and a scholar of the Bible. She enjoyed reading and traveling.

Jill is survived by her children: Sharon Raymond of Shutesbury, MA, Gregory McDaniel of Surfside, FL, Dr. Robert McDaniel of Indianapolis, Chris Sunkel of Paris, IL and Phillip and Mark McDaniel, both of Martinsville. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Katherine and Lauren Sunkel, John Robert McDaniel, Jennifer McDaniel Kummer, Nick McDaniel, Sojee Raymond and Matthew McDaniel; great grandchildren: Jonas and Mille; siblings: Ann McDaniel of Martinsville, Elvia Rhein and Gino Olivier, both of Florida.

Jill was preceded in death by her husband, Luford, on August 24, 1972; and one son: Eric McDaniel.

Father John Hall will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at noon at the St. Martin Tours Catholic Church, 1709 E. Harrison Street in Martinsville. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Funeral services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown. Burial will be at Liberty Christian Church Cemetery in Martinsville.

Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Jill to the Salvation Army, 3100 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.

Although we were unable to attend, we were there in spirit. I know our Aunt Jill was most proud of her beautiful family. We feel she is at peace and surrounded by love always.
