Virginia D. (Tankersly) Emberton, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 18, 2016 at her residence in Brown County.
She was born on February 19, 1925, in Garrett County, Kentucky to the late, Alfred and Ruby (Wren) Tankersly. Virginia married James E. Emberton on October 16, 1941 in Brown County. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1991 after 49 loving years of marriage.
She retired in 2010 from Hickory Ridge Senior Center in Brown County, where she worked as a custodian and food preparer for 10 years. Prior to that, she worked for Harmen Becker in Martinsville on the assembly line for 10 years and held the same position with Central Coil for 15 years. She was a member of the Spearsville Church of Christ, attended the Bible Study Fellowship Group in Greenwood and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Martinsville, where she led the Hope Class in singing.
Virginia was an avid reader of the Bible and enjoyed walking, tending to her flower gardens, listening to her son play Country music and being active in her church. She was also an active member of the Hickory Ridge Senior Center in Brown County.
Virginia is survived by her children, James P. Emberton of Brown County, Shirley A. Mullikin of Martinsville, Colleen C. (Daniel) Lehr and Linda L. Dilley both of Brown County, Joyce M. (Ridgely) Chittum of Clay County, Gayla J. Haley of Greenwood; brother, June Tankersly of Bargersville; 17 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Gerene Walker, Winnie Barron, Dissie Johnson, Daniel L. Emberton and two infant children; great grandson: PFC Robert W. Murray; and a great-great grandson, Cobrin Hammons.
The Revs. Peter Heland and Jeff Floyd will conduct a funeral service on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Spearsville Wesleyan Church Cemetery in Brown County.
