Thomas Eugene "Tom" Heacox, age 80 passed away peacefully Thursday morning, August 14, 2014 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was a resident of Greenwood, Indiana.
Tom was born August 7, 1934, in Brazil, Indiana to the late Harold Roy and Hazel Marie (Elkins) Heacox. Tom was a 1952 graduate of Manual High School in Indianapolis where he played successfully on the basketball team. He married Betty Gene (Barrett) on October 31, 1985 in Greenwood. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2007 after 21 years of marriage.
Tom was retired from Olinger Distributing Company and previously worked for Higlemyers Distribution Center in Indianapolis. He was a member of the Greenwood Christian Church and an International Teamsters Retiree. Tom was an avid golfer as well as a champion of many competitions for many years. He was also a caretaker of Sarah Shank Golf Course in Indianapolis for many years. In his leisure time he was a big fan of horse racing and enjoyed walking the Greenwood Park Mall with his friends.
Tom is survived by two daughters: Cindy Lue (Michael) Crafton of Greenwood & Donna Sue (Mark) Lebow of Bloomington, IL; three step children: Shirley Ann (Mark) Willoughby of Homestead, FL, Jimmy Dewayne (Carolyn) Clark & Michael Keith (Robin) Clark, both of Trafalgar. He will be remembered by his siblings: Mary Smallwood of Indianapolis, Larry (Nancy) Heacox of Martinsville and Jack (Beverly) Heacox of Greenwood; grandchildren: Michael (Katie) Crafton II, Kelley (Jeremy) Yagle, Matthew (Carysa) Crafton and Casey Crafton all of Indianapolis and Aarron Lebow & Thomas Lebow both of Bloomington, IL; three great grandchildren and one on the way.
Tom was preceded in death by siblings: Harold, James, Wilburn & Don Heacox and Virginia Lustig.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Greenwood Christian Church, 2045 Averitt Road in Greenwood, Indiana. The Rev. Shan Ruderford will conduct a Memorial Service immediately following the visitation. Funeral services have been entrusted to Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
