Maurice A. Barnes, age 87, passed away Wednesday morning, July 6, 2016 at the Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a resident of Brown County.
Maurice was born on August 26, 1928, in Helmsburg, to the late Demaree and Hazel (Jones) Barnes. He was a 1946 graduate of Helmsburg High School and went on to serve as a Private First Class with the United States Marine Corps. Maurice married Catherine W. (Walker) Barnes at the First Christian Church of Morgantown on October 9, 1953. She preceded him in death on February 11, 2015, after 61 devoted years of marriage.
Maurice retired in 1990 from Speedway Press as a Printer after 23 years of service. Prior to that, he worked for Bedford Printing and Indianapolis Blue Print & Lithograph. After retirement, Maurice was the owner and operator of Barnes Hunting Farm in Brown County for 25 years.
He was a member of the Unity Baptist Church in Brown County where he served as a former Deacon. Maurice was a former member of the First Christian Church of Morgantown and the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Greenwood. He enjoyed going out to eat and visiting with family and friends. Maurice was known for never meeting a stranger, always encouraging others and being there to help those in need. He was a fan of IU Men’s Basketball and enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his children, Carol Barnes of Eminence and Mark Barnes of Brown County; sister, Joan Honeay of Greenwood; grandchildren, Alan Barnes of Trafalgar and Melissa Mofield of Samaria; great grandchildren, Adison and Evan Barnes and Bentley Mofield.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Catherine and siblings, Bertha and Dalton Barnes, Leona Kelso and Mary Mayhew.
Rev. John Parsley will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Unity Baptist Church, 7361 Spearsville Road in Brown County. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery in Brown County. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
