Crystal Sylvia (Gossling) Cates

Crystal Sylvia (Gossling) Cates, age 79, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013 at her home in Morgantown.

Sylvia was born in Indianapolis on July 9, 1934 to the late Walter and Crystal (Rook) Gossling. She was a 1950 graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to earn her Nursing Degree from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1952. Sylvia married Arthur Curtis Cates, Sr. on November 12, 1976 in Springfield, TN. He preceded her in death on June 25, 2004 after 27 loving years of marriage.

Sylvia's true passion in life was being a Registered Nurse and being able to help others in need. She retired in 2005 as an RN after 50 years of service working both at Morgan County Hospital and the Johnson Memorial Hospital. Sylvia enjoyed the outdoors by working in her flower gardens and walking with her dog "Reggie". She loved all animals and enjoyed reading.

She is survived by a niece: Kyle (Steven) DeWeese of Avon; and two step children: Susan Frye of Takoma, WA and Arthur C. Cates, Jr. of Maple Falls, WA.

Sylvia was preceded in death by a sister: Veva Snelling.

The Rev. Mark Boardman will conduct a funeral service 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Morgantown.

Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Sylvia to the Morgan County Humane Society, 690 W. Mitchell Avenue, Martinsville, IN 46151.

We both enjoyed working with Syl at Morgan County Hospital, she was a caring nurse and great coworker. Sure do miss those days. Goodbye Sylvia...Til we meet again.

I worked with Sylvia Cates @ Morgan County Hospital. She was a caring and knowlegeable nurse, and pleasant co-worker and friend. I will miss her. May God continue to bless Sylvia and her whole family.
