Katherine A. “Kathy” (Muggenburg) Smith, age 62 passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 16, 2024 at her home in Brown County. She was a former resident of Knightstown.
Kathy was born June 18, 1961 in St. Paul, Minnesota to her parents, Dr. Bruce and Marianne (Nordgren) Muggenburg. She was a 1979 graduate of Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico and went on to attend Illinois State University to study Geology.
Kathy was an award-winning author working under the pseudonyms, Kate Watterson and Emma Wildes. She had over 100 published books from murder mysteries to historical romance novels. Kathy was recognized for her writing talent by being the recipient of many awards, including an Eppie, a WisRWA Reader’s Choice Award and a Lories Best Published Award. She was a member of the Romance Writers of America.
While attending Illinois State University, she met her future husband of 40 loving years, Chris D. Smith, whom she married on December 30, 1983 in Galva, Illinois. Kathy is also survived by her father and step-mother, Dr. Bruce (Carolyn) Muggenburg of Albuquerque, New Mexico; children, Ashley (Jeff) Dikis of Des Moines, Iowa, Chelsea (Bryan) Root of Greenfield and Alex Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia; siblings, Virginia (Joel) Lacey of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Carl Muggenburg of Alpine, Arizona; grandchildren, Orion, Leo, Hayden & Stephen.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marrianne Muggenburg.
Kathy will be remembered for her excellent cooking, baking and for her love of family, especially her grandchildren.
In keeping with her wishes, Kathy will be cremated with a Celebration of Life Service to held at a future date. Cremation services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
